AbFB = ( 4,7 ± 1,8 ± 0,1 ) %, Ac FB= (-6,8 ± 2,5 ± 0,9 ) % bei <s0.5> = 89,51 GeV,
AbFB = ( 9,72 ± 0,42 ± 0,15) %, AcFB = ( 5,68 ± 0,54 ± 0,39) % bei <s0.5> = 91,25 GeV,
AbFB = (10,3 ± 1,5 ± 0,2 ) %, AcFB = ( 14,6 ±2,0 ± 0,8 ) % bei <s0.5> = 92,95 GeV.
This thesis deals with the measurement of the b and c quark forward-backward asymmetries of hadronic Z decays recorded with the OPAL experiment at the electron positron collider LEP. After an overview over the different kinds of heavy flavour forward-backward asymmetry measurements made within the OPAL collaboration, one of the methods is described in full detail. This method is based on the semileptonic b and c quark decays in order to identify primary bbbar and ccbar events.
Two neural networks are used to separate the bb and cc events from each other and from the background. The first neural network is trained to identify b -> l-, the second to identify c -> l+ decays.
A maximum likelihood fit is used to extract the b and c quark forward-backward asymmetries AbFB and AcFB at three centre-of-mass energies s0.5 and the average B mixing parameter χ from a sample with at least one identified electron or muon in the final state. Using all data collected by OPAL near the Z resonance between 1990 and 2000, the asymmetries are measured to be:
AbFB = ( 4.7 ± 1.8 ± 0.1 ) %, Ac FB= (-6.8 ± 2.5 ± 0.9 ) % at <s0.5> = 89.51 GeV,
AbFB = ( 9.72 ± 0.42 ± 0.15) %, AcFB = ( 5.68 ± 0.54 ± 0.39) % at <s0.5> = 91.25 GeV,
AbFB = (10.3 ± 1.5 ± 0.2 ) %, AcFB = ( 14.6 ±2.0 ± 0.8 ) % at <s0.5> = 92.95 GeV.
For the average B mixing parameter, a value of
The second value gives the statistical, the third the systematic error on the measurements. These results are combined with other OPAL measurements of the b and c quark forward-backward asymmetries, in order to derive values for the OPAL pole asymmetries.
The results of a global fit to all electroweak observables from LEP and SLD are taken to discuss the current situation concerning the asymmetry parameters Ab and Ac, the vector and axial-vector coupling constants v and a for b and c quarks, and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons sin2 Θleff. Finally, a prediction for the value of the Standard Model Higgs boson mass is given using the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, sin2 Θleff extracted from the b and c quark forward-backward asymmetries.
